The Ball Player

While I was in college, I worked in several TV shops. At some I did a lot of in-home service calls. Most went pretty smoothly, but not all of them.

One day I fixed a nice console in a very nice house, in a very nice neighborhood.

Technically, all went well, the set was running again, and I completed the bill.

When I handed it over to the owner, he looked me over, and said, "I played a little ball in school. I suppose you saw the trophies. You're a pretty big guy. Here's what we'll do", wadding up the bill and throwing it into another room, "If you can get past me to the bill, I pay it. If not, it's on the house".

For once, just the right words came to me at just the right time, and I said, "Sorry, I just fix TV's, we have lawyers for this sort of situation", and walked out the door. I wish I'd had a camera to capture the look on his face.
